If you’re happy and you know it…

I always love asking for new running songs and seeing what’s on people’s playlists. As I was running last week, I realized my workout playlist is dominated by a certain kind of music:

  • Lose Yourself – Eminem
  • Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen
  • Blow – Kei$ha
  • Come With Me – Puff Daddy
  • Untouched – The Veronicas
  • Never Again – Nickelback
  • Rolling in the Deep – Adele
  • Run This Town/Posthumus Zone – Jay-Z and Rhianna

Angry much?

I’m actually a very happy person in real life! Some people run and work out better with dance music, some with happy music, and some, like me, apparently have anger issues. I think it just helps me focus. We’ll go with that.

Once during a race as I was motoring along, a fellow runner got up in my face, as we were running, cheering like it was no tomorrow… “WOOHOO!!!! ISN’T THIS GREAT!? I LOVE THIS RACE!!”. I’m not joking. She got to Charlotte first and I waved her ahead because I knew she was ready to blow. It was then that I realized… I am not a “happy” runner. I am an angry and focused runner.

What kind of music do you work out to? Have a great long weekend everyone!

  1. I love me some ANGRY explicit music when I run :) Actually, I will run to pretty much anything as long as it has a good beat. I am NOT picky. Curse words welcome though!

Wow, I guess I’m not a happy runner either because I would have wanted to trip that girl! I can’t run in a bad mood because it gets in the way of my focus, but I have to be very focused and distraction free. I listen to steady quick beats – and sometimes the worst songs will do as long as I can listen to the beat and block out the lyrics. I can’t listen to things that are slower – they make me run slow(er)!

I think your competitive streak manifests in your choice of music even whenyou’re only trying to beat your last time. The stronger musical beats rev us up while Norah Jones makes you want to glide, watch the trees, swing your head, sway your wrists from side to side. Mellow, man…..
And check out “Rumor Has It” by Adele. You’ll be slappin’ the pavement.
